This guidance is issued by the Health and Safety Executive. Following the guidance is not compulsory and P Ss are free to take other action. But if you follow the guidance you will normally be doing enough to comply with the law. Health and safety inspectors seek to ensure compliance with the law and may refer to this guidance as illustrating good practice.

CDM, requires a pro-active approach by Contractors to manage Health and Safety on site. At the same time it also demands that clients and designers consider Health and Safety in the design process, avoiding risks wherever possible.

Why do I need a Health and Safety Policy Statement?
If you employ five or more people you must, by law, have a written statement of your health and safety policy. This should be your own statement, specific to your firm, setting out your general policy for protecting the health and safety of your employees at work and the organisation and arrangements for putting that policy in to practice.
